Widdop set to sign Wolves deal

Gareth Widdop injury

Reports suggest that England utility back Gareth Widdop has agreed a two-year deal with Super League side Warrington Wolves for the 2020 season.

The St George playmaker has made no secret of his desire to play in Super League before he retires and it looks like he will he granted his wish at the end of the 2019 season. It would see him link up in a dream half-back partnership with Blake Austin, who joined the Wolves this off season.

To smooth his move to England, Widdop has confirmed he will honour his contract to play for the Red V in 2019 and could even return after his deal with Warrington finishes. He will be 32 by the time his potential contract with the Wolves ends.

Seeing a true global star at the Halliwell Jones will be a massive boost to Super League as it looks to reverse the drain of talent Down Under, with the likes of John Bateman and Ryan Hall playing in the NRL next year.

Huddersfield, Wigan and St Helens were all in the race for Widdop, who played at full-back for England in the World Cup, but it seems Warrington have their man.

It’s highly likely Widdop will become Warrington’s highest ever paid player with the club pulling out all the stops to secure the signature of the 29-year-old former Melbourne Storm stand-off.
