Why Super League star has avoided ban despite “unnecessary” contact with match official

The Match Review Panel has had their say on the weekend’s action and as always there are plenty of players who were cited by the panel but not punished.

One of those is James Harrison who has avoided any punishment despite what the panel described as “unnecessary” contact with the match official.

Often we see bans for contact with officials but the panel have been smart in their approach here.

They understood the contact to be “passive” and “to ask for attention” and therefore no ban was given which shows the panel working at its best as a situation like this can also serve as a reminder for players to avoid contact but there is no need to pursue a ban.

The minutes state: “Player places hand on referee to ask for attention of the official. Unnecessary but passive contact.”

Following the latest round of Betfred Super League fixtures, the Match Review Panel have issued the following sanctions:

James McDonnell (Leeds Rhinos) – Grade D Punching – 2 Match Penalty Notice & £250 Fine
Sione Mata’utia (St Helens) – Grade A Dangerous Contact – £250 Fine
Nene McDonald (Leeds Rhinos) – Grade A Other Contrary Behaviour – Not Applicable
Sauaso Sue (Hull KR) – Grade A Raising Knee in Tackle – £250 Fine
King Vuniyayawa (Salford Red Devils) – Grade B High Tackle – £250 Fine
