Why Super League star dodged ban despite being cited three times by disciplinary panel

Michael McIlorum is heading to Hull KR

The match review panel have had a look at the action from this weekend’s Super League action which saw a fiery affair as Leeds Rhinos edged Salford Red Devils after a usually ferocious derby between rivals Hull KR and Hull FC.

There were also big moments addressed as Wigan Warriors were beaten by Wakefield Trinity and of course as you would expect from Warrington Wolves vs St Helens there were some moments picked out by the pundits on Sky Sports.

Many were expecting a busy Match Review Panel but despite a fiery weekend in Super League it hasn’t been a busy week for the match review panel with only five players charged and four of them fined.

These were Jai Whitbread, Brad O’Neill, Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook and Paul Seguier.

Unsurprisingly, the ban came from the clash between Salford Red Devils and the Leeds Rhinos but not for the scuffle.

Instead Oliver Partington has been banned for dangerous contact posing a threat to the head, neck and spine of his opponent.

One player meanwhile dodged a ban despite being cited three times.

That was Catalans Dragons’ Michael McIlorum. He was cited for a late hit, other contrary behaviour and pushing.

Some may question why he avoided a ban but this is an example of how this system works effectively as it identifies these borderline moments which can be seen as something of a warning to the players yet no bans are awarded when not needed.
