Why St Helens star avoided ban after yellow card offence

Super Round 13 was a brilliant round of action headlined by a feisty affair between Leeds Rhinos and St Helens.

In the 76th minute of the game a mass pile in was sparked by a Sam Walters error with an altercation between James McDonnell and Jonny Lomax the epi-centre.

McDonnell was sent off after the touch judge said he saw a punch from McDonnell in the altercation.

He is the only player banned from the weekend’s action as he was hit with a two match ban and a fine.

In the same game Sione Mata’utia was yellow carded for a below the knees tackle on Mikolaj Oledzki and he has been fined subsequently.

Here is what the match review panel had to say on the incident:

“Dangerous Contact – Defender uses any part of their body forcefully to twist, bend or otherwise apply pressure to the limb or limbs of an opposing player in a way that involves an unacceptable risk of injury to that player.”

Some may question why the incident is only fined.

The answer is as simple as it is a Grade A offence with the panel seemingly deeming that the contact on Oledzki didn’t pose that much of a risk compared to some of the other tackles we have seen this season.

Also Oledzki doesn’t appear to have suffered a serious injury unlike Mike Cooper from a hip drop tackle from Morgan Knowles which carried the same kind of charge.
