Why one of Greece’s best players & former Warrington Wolves star won’t feature against England

Greece have named their side for their final game of the world cup which sees them take on hosts England but will do so without their star player Billy Magoulias who delivered one of the moments of the tournament when his chip kick, despite being a middle forward, led to a memorable Greece try on their World Cup debut against France.

Greece captain Jordan Meads returns to the side for the match against England at Bramall Lane on Saturday while Magoulias has flown back to Australia to be with his partner during the birth of his first child.

Magoulias spent the first part of 2022 with Warrington Wolves after making the switch from Cronulla Sharks. However he left mid-season due to personal reasons.

Returning to the squad, coach Steve Georgallis has named four Greek domestic players with Ioannis Rousoglou (Aris Eagles), Ioannis (Johny) Nake and Konstantinos Katsidonis making their World Cup debuts.

“I flagged before the tournament how important our domestic players are and the role they played in getting us here through the qualification process,” Georgallis said.

“Losing Billy is a blow but we have Jordan back and the players have responded well to every challenge they have been set.

“We understand the enormity of the task against England however we won’t be shying away from our jobs or taking a backward step.”

Greece play England at Bramall Lane on Saturday 29 October at 2:30pm.
