Matt Peet will be taking a different approach this week as he prepares his Wigan Warriors side for next week’s Super League play-off semi-final.
It’s been another special season at the Brick Community Stadium, with Wigan winning every piece of silverware on offer on both the domestic and international stage. The Warriors got the season up and running by beating Penrith Panthers in the World Club Challenge and they followed that up by lifting the Challenge Cup at Wembley Stadium in June.
They claimed another trophy last Thursday night as their comfortable win over Salford Red Devils on home soil ensured they pipped Hull KR to the League Leaders’ Shield and they are now just 160 minutes away from what would be an historic quadruple.
Of course, by finishing inside the Super League’s top two, the Cherry and Whites now have a home semi-final to look forward to in the play-offs. That game won’t come until next weekend, though, with the Warriors set to take on the lowest ranked winner from this week’s eliminators.
However, it’s fair to say Wigan won’t be using their hard-earned week away from the action as an excuse to take their foot off the gas momentarily. Instead, Peet and the rest of his Wigan coaching staff will be taking the squad on a three-day training camp down in Somerset to keep them ticking over and prepare them for the rigours and demands of knockout rugby league.
“We trained today (Monday), we’re off tomorrow and we’re down in Bath on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday so we’re going to go away and have a pretty intense training camp there and get some work done,” Peet told Serious About RL.
“We’ll be really focused and the players will spend a bit of time together as well. We feel like a change of scenery will do us good at this time of year and that’s what we’re going to do.”
Asked if it was something Wigan Warriors had done previously, Peet added: “No it isn’t actually. Last year we just trained at Robin Park but it’s a different approach.”
