Why Liam Watts didn’t receive a ban for tripping – disciplinary minutes disclosed

When Liam Watts was sent from the field in Castleford Tigers’ 23-12 victory over Hull FC on Friday night, opinion was divided as to whether or not he deserved the yellow card.

Referee Ben Thaler believed the Castleford prop had tripped Jordan Lane intentionally as the Hull man stepped Watts’ attempted tackle.

Watts was given ten minutes in the sinbin, but the disciplinary match review has taken no further action.

The minutes revealed that “Player has planted his foot and opponent goes over knee/upper leg in process of making a tackle.”

That means that the Tigers forward will be free to play against Wigan tomorrow evening as the West Yorkshire club attempt to keep their place in the top six play-offs.

Castleford’s triumph over Hull brought the Tigers out of the play-off wilderness after months spent battling to climb their way back in.
