Why Gareth Widdop will not play for Warrington Wolves against Huddersfield Giants

When Warrington Wolves boss Daryl Powell named his 21-man squad for the visit of Huddersfield Giants to the Halliwell Jones Stadium, there was one glaring omission.

That was halfback Gareth Widdop. With Jack Hughes already confirmed to be out for four months with a shoulder injury and Stefan Ratchford missing, too, the last thing Powell needed was for Widdop to be out.

Against Hull FC, Ratchford and Widdop suffered injuries with scans revealing quad (Ratchford) and glute (Widdop) damage which will see both of them miss a couple of weeks’ worth of action.

It does, however, mean that halfback Riley Dean will get his chance alongside England halfback George Williams.
