Why eight Super League stars have been banned

A whopping eight players have been hit by bans from the Match Review Panel this week after a feisty Round 12 of Super League action.

These include Leeds Rhinos star Zane Tetevano who is unsurprisingly hit with a ban.

He has picked up a two match ban for his late hit on Harry Smith of Wigan Warriors which saw him sent off for contact with the head.

The likes of Curtis Sironen of St Helens, Liam Watts and Bureta Faraimo of Castleford Tigers, Jesse Sue of Hull KR, Nathan Peats of Huddersfield Giants, Kelepi Tanginoa of Wakefield Trinity and Scott Taylor of Hull FC have all been banned.

Meanwhile, St Helens star Matty Lees of the Saints has been sent to tribunal for striking.

But why have these eight players been hit with suspensions?

Here’s what the match review panel says about each player:

Zane Tetevano:

“Dangerous Contact – A defending player makes contact with an opponent after the ball has been released by an opponent in a vulnerable position which causes flexion to the head, neck or spinal column on an attacking player, which poses an unacceptable risk of injury to that player.”

Curtis Sironen:

“Dangerous Contact – A defending player makes contact with an opponent after the ball has been released by an opponent in a vulnerable position which causes flexion to the head, neck or spinal column on an attacking player, which poses an unacceptable risk of injury to that player.”

Liam Watts:

“Dangerous Contact – Defender uses any part of their body forcefully to twist, bend or otherwise apply pressure to the limb or limbs of an opposing player in a way that involves an unacceptable risk of injury to that player.”

Bureta Faraimo:

“Dangerous Throw – lifting opponent into a dangerous position.”

Jesse Sue:

“Dangerous Contact – A defending player makes contact with an opponent after the ball has been released by an opponent in a vulnerable position which causes flexion to the head, neck or spinal column on an attacking player, which poses an unacceptable risk of injury to that player.”

Nathan Peats:

Scott Taylor:

“Dangerous Contact – Defender uses any part of their body forcefully to twist, bend or otherwise apply pressure to the limb or limbs of an opposing player in a way that involves an unacceptable risk of injury to that player”

There have been seven players charged who have avoided a ban. Four of them have been fined whilst three of them have avoided any punishment.
