The off-season is a time when we see lots of player contracts renewed or extended in Super League but what of the head coaches? We’ve looked at when every current Super League head coach sees their contract run out with some clubs needing to act sooner than others.
There’s recently been a big coaching change with Craig Lingard relieved of his duties at Castleford Tigers following Martin Jepson’s takeover, and assistant Danny McGuire handed the keys at Wheldon Road.
There were also a couple of key contract extensions confirmed during the 2024 season with Paul Wellens securing a new deal as well as Hull KR boss Willie Peters, among others.
As we look forward to the 2025 season, we’ve looked at when each coach’s deal expires with some only locked in until the end of the upcoming season.
When every Super League coach’s contract expires
Castleford Tigers – Danny McGuire (2027)
Jepson’s first major act in charge at Cas saw Lingard out and McGuire in as he took decisive action. The former Leeds Rhinos man has signed a three-year deal meaning his contract runs until the end of the 2027 season.
Catalans Dragons – Steve McNamara (2026)
McNamara was another of those who renewed his contract during the 2024 campaign with the Engishman’s stay in France extended until the end of the 2026 season. In spite of that, owner Bernard Guasch threatened major changes after the club’s loss to London Broncos meaning the Englishman could be under the microscope if Catalans don’t start well in 2025.
Huddersfield Giants – Luke Robinson (2027)
Robinson is yet another example of an assistant taking the top job when the boss is axed as he was appointed head coach on a three-year deal after Ian Watson’s sacking. Following the confirmation of his role, the Giants won two of three, albeit a whopping 66-0 loss to Warrington was sandwiched between those wins.
Hull FC – John Cartwright (2027)
Another new coach and another three-year deal with Cartwright one of the high-profile appointments given his esteemed history in the NRL. He was the first-ever head coach of the Gold Coast Titans and has spent a decade since in various assistant roles.
Hull KR – Willie Peters (2028)
Peters was another who signed a new deal in 2024 but the Robins opted to tie him down until the end of 2028, with the Australian signing a four-year deal. A maiden Grand Final appearance is a sign of the progress under his leadership and fans will be hoping he can take them one step further in his next four seasons.
Leeds Rhinos – Brad Arthur (2025)
Arthur only joined last season on a temporary basis but did extend his deal by one year to take him through until the end of the 2025 season. However, that’s already seen questions emerge now about his 2026 status. With the NRL set to expand, it will be hard for Leeds to tie him down further given Arthur’s self-stated ambitions Down Under.
Leigh Leopards – Adrian Lam (2027)
There was certainly a theme with Super League head coach contract extensions in 2024 with Adrian Lam another to renew and be handed a three-year deal. He’s overseeing a rebuild this off-season that will be one to watch early on in 2025.
Salford Red Devils – Paul Rowley (2025)
For a man who has been constantly linked with moves away from Salford, there is now certainty over Paul Rowley’s situation. It was confirmed in October that 2025 would be his final year as a head coach before he ascends to a Director of Rugby role. Kurt Haggerty will take the top job from 2026 onwards on a three-year deal.
St Helens – Paul Wellens (2025)
Paul Wellens’ contract status was a major focus during their mid-season slump in 2024 but once the wins came again, it was announced that he’d signed a one-year extension. Inevitably, like Arthur, questions will be asked of 2026 as we delve deeper into the upcoming season.
Wakefield Trinity – Daryl Powell (2027)
Matt Ellis meant business when he took over Wakefield Trinity in 2023 as he built a super squad and it all started with the appointment of Daryl Powell on a four-year deal. Trinity have since become a Grade A club and Powell steps into the second year of his four-year contract.
Warrington Wolves – Sam Burgess (2026)
Burgess had signed on a two-year deal but as a result of his near-immediate success in turning Wire’s form around, the club handed him a one-year extension taking his deal to the end of the 2206 campaign.
Wigan Warriors – Matt Peet (2030)
Peet and his assistants were all handed huge seven-year deals at the start of the 2024 season meaning that the trio are tied in until the end of the 2030 season. Since then the club have also tied down star youngster Junior Nsemba to a deal expiring at the end of 2030.
