Sam Stone has described his loan move to Warrington Wolves as ‘massive’ as he prepares to make his first appearance in primrose and blue.
After spending the first half of the season with struggling Salford Red Devils, where he has been since 2023, Stone has joined Warrington on a loan deal until the end of the season. The move sees Dan Russell and Tom Whitehead go the other way, with the latter being just a four-week deal initially.
Stone adds size and experience to Warrington’s pack, with the 27-year-old previously representing Newcastle Knights, Gold Coast Titans and Leigh Leopards before the switch to Salford. He has made 50 outings for the Red Devils in the time that has passed since, with 10 tries coming along the way.
However, he was accused of downing tools by Paul Rowley last weekend, ensuring he missed the clash with St Helens in a bid to force a move through.
He’s expected to be included in the Wire squad to face Huddersfield Giants on Saturday and he’ll be pushing to make an impression as he looks to help Warrington on towards the play-offs.
Warrington Wolves’ Sam Stone reflects on loan switch
“It’s a massive move for me,” Stone said when the deal was announced on Tuesday afternoon.
“I’m excited to get out on the field for Warrington for the second half of the campaign. I’m looking forward to getting around the boys and we’re ready for a big couple of months ahead. I’m excited to be a part of it.
“The boys have been very welcoming and I’ve been impressed coming in today.
“The Halliwell Jones has one of the best atmospheres in the comp and I’m excited now to run out in front of the Warrington fans.”
Stone becomes the second Salford player to join Warrington this season, following in the footsteps of three-time Lance Todd Trophy winner Marc Sneyd.
