Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet has dismissed suggestions his side’s 54-0 win over Leigh Leopards was the sign of a team smarting following a trophyless 2025.
The Warriors blew Leigh Leopards away on Thursday night, scoring nine tries and putting their visitors through the wringer with their intensity and work rate on both sides of the ball. Leigh found themselves struggling to keep their heads above water at times as Wigan turned the screw to pick up their third league win of the year in emphatic fashion.
Adam Keighran got the first before Jai Field and Harry Smith claimed doubles and Bevan French, Zach Eckersley, Junior Nsemba and Tom Forber touched down.
It was a performance to savour in the Battle of the Borough, but Peet insists his side aren’t motivated by last season’s disappointment.
“No, it’s the sign of a team that wants to improve and that’s never been any different,” Peet told Sky Sports when asked whether the win was a sign of a smarting team. “People talk about last year like we weren’t motivated but we were, we just weren’t good enough.
“At the moment we’re playing well, but we played well in round three over in Las Vegas last year, so it’s a long season.”
On the game itself, the Wigan Warriors boss added: “It was a step in the right direction for sure. Leigh had a lot to overcome through injuries before the game and during the game but a lot of what we did was very good.
“I think there were times when we could have executed a little bit better but I won’t shy away from the fact that I’m very proud of them.
“I think it’s the balance in our game [that is most pleasing]. We posted points and we played some free flowing stuff but we got the basics right, we tucked it under, ran hard, kicked well and tackled hard.”
