Hull FC have confirmed that Steve McNamara will take over as head coach of the club for the 2027 season and beyond.
Following the club’s announcement in the past fortnight that John Cartwright would be leaving his role as boss a year early, speculation grew as to who would be the man to replace him
Per John Cartwright, the news that McNamara would be his successor was “leaked” by the club, a move which didn’t sit right with the 60-year-old, who admitted he felt “betrayed”.
Those comments have led to the club parting ways with him even early than the end of the season, with the former Gold Coast Titans boss stepping down from his role today [April 17].
During Hull FC’s defeat to St Helens last night, Cartwright was met with a show of support from the FC faithful, with some staying behind to clap him off as he went down the tunnel for what would be the final time.
The same can’t be said for Hull CEO Richie Myler, who the Sky Sports cameras panned to a number of times during their broadcast. When on screen, a ring of boos could be heard at the MKM Stadium, as FC fans voiced their displeasure over the way Myler has said to have treated Cartwright over his dismissal.
It is worth noting that Myler, who only became the club’s CEO in January 2025, has not commented on the situation as yet, meaning his version of events is not yet public knowledge.
However, in the club’s statement confirming McNamara’s appointment, Myler said nothing on Cartwright’s stepping down, but did say that bringing the former England head coach to the club was a “powerful moment.”
His words read: “We are delighted to secure Steve’s services. He is a coach of the highest calibre, and someone who truly understands this club and the city.
“Steve McNamara coming home is a powerful moment for Hull FC.”
Meanwhile, chairman Andrew Thirkill said: “We believe Steve is the right person to lead Hull FC into our next phase and are thrilled with his appointment.
“His experience, leadership and standards will be critical as we build a team capable of competing consistently at the top of Super League.”
