What Hull FC boss John Cartwright after his side’s error-ridden loss at Wakefield Trinity

Hull FC head coach John Cartwright admits errors let his side down on a tough night at Wakefield Trinity on Thursday night.

The Black and Whites were beaten 14-10 by Wakefield at Belle Vue as they slipped to their third defeat on the bounce in the 2026 Super League season.

Hull actually took the lead through Lewis Martin and the flying winger touched down again in the second half to push the away team into a 10-4 lead. However, an error just before the break allowed Wakefield to go in level and a one-sided second half saw Hull camped in their own half for the majority of the game after the break.

It was a resolute showing defensively but with the ball in hand it was far from clean and Cartwright knows his side have to tidy things up if they’re to pull themselves out of the early season slump.

“A little bit to like about it,” Cartwright told Sky Sports after the game. “Defensively we showed plenty of grit but errors again cost us.

“The start of the second half wasn’t what we spoke about at half-time but we got through that and we know coming in that it would be a gritty affair and it turned out that way.

“The start of the second half, we just start slow. They marched us down the field from the kick off, a couple of errors. We did defend our line really well I thought and they scored a try there at the end that gave them momentum, the crowd got involved and after that we just couldn’t get out of our own half.

“It’s a different start to the year, it’s a different year. I think we’ve come through tonight injury free, a couple of head knocks, but we’ve got a long turnaround this week. There was a lot to like, we played tough but errors were a concern last week and again this week.”
