Wakefield Trinity boss Daryl Powell has given his verdict on the incident between Jazz Tevaga and Liam Marshall in his sides defeat to Wigan Warriors.
Trinity lost out 26-22 to Wigan, who progress to the Challenge Cup semi-finals. They will face St Helens for a spot at Wembley, but Powell was left feeling like it should have been them coming up against Paul Rowley’s Red Vee.
A key moment in the defeat saw Tevaga kick out at Marshall in the tackle. The Wakefield man’s leg was trapped underneath the Wigan, and Tevaga looked in incredible pain.
Trying to break free from the tackle, the Samoan international kicked out in desperation, but regardless it was still an intentional kick to an opposing player and something that deserved a punishment.
Revealing his thoughts on the matter, Powell said post-match: “I thought Liam Marshall knew what he was doing.
“To be honest, I think he sits on Jazz’s leg, but I don’t think Jazz can respond like that.
“I don’t have any problem with the sin-bin, but I just thought that was pretty cute from Liam.
“It’s also very difficult to referee as well, so I get that, but I just don’t think we want to be doing those sorts of things that are going to get you sin-binned.”
The sin-bin was arguably the turning point of the game, with Wigan scoring twice whilst Wakefield were down to 12. However, Powell believes his side still had enough in the tank to go and take the win and won’t be using that as an excuse.
“Everybody’s going to point to that. I still thought we should have wo the game, but it doesn’t help.
“I’m not going to blame Jazz for the loss, I think that’s important, but if anybody gets binned – ‘what is it for?’, ‘Is there any rationale in what he’s done?’
“I think he’d be disappointed with that. He is, I know because I’ve spoke to him.
“I think it’s an important lesson for Jazz and for all of us really.”

It should be scrutinised carefully, if Marshall did sit on the leg then he should face action. It looked nasty and painful, but you can’t kick out like that.
