What a Merrin Go Round

Australian Test Star Trent Merrin has done a dramatic U Turn and opted to stay at Penrith Panthers despite agreeing terms to sign a 4 year deal with Super League side Leeds Rhinos. The talented second row forward was ready to be announced as a marquee signing at Leeds but after second thoughts has decided to sign a new deal with the Panthers .

Rhinos new boss Dave Furner  had admitted interest in Merrin yesterday but Penrith boss Phil Gould took to twitter to confirm the 7 times Kangaroos international , who has also played 134 games for St George Illawarra , was staying at Penrith Stadium .

Merrin was the subject of a last minute bid from South Sydney , for all this was denied by Wayne Bennett who will be going there in 2020 , and when this fell through the Rhinos were adamant they had their man but it seems Merrin will know see out the final 2 years of his Panthers contract , though it remains to be seen if Bennett comes back in for him when he takes over at the helm for the bunnies in 12 months time .

Leeds will know go back to the drawing board as they look to capture a 2nd marquee signing , they were alerted to the breakdown in Shaun Johnson’s contract talks with NZ Warriors but the wages would be too much for Super League .
