George Williams may have replaced the retiring Sam Tomkins as England captain but it is Jack Welsby who will replace Tomkins as England’s number one and is expected to keep that shirt for the next decade.
But the big question when it comes to international rugby league is: can England finally beat Australia?
Great Britain last beat Australia in 2006 and it has been a long wait since that victory for the next one.
England haven’t played the green and golds since the 2017 World Cup Final.
However, Welsby has said that England have the quality to defeat Australia now.
“I know for a fact that what we’ve got in this squad is more than enough to turn them over,” Welsby said to BBC.
“No-one gave us a chance against Penrith just like no-one ever gives England a chance against southern hemisphere teams.
“No doubt Australia will still see theirs as the stronger competition, but I know how much importance Saints put on winning that world title and it shows we have the quality and the belief to go with it.
“I’m really excited about the build-up to 2025. I’m more than confident in the group and the mixture of more experienced heads with so much talent coming through. It’s a really exciting time to be associated with England rugby league.”
