Wigan Warriors winger Liam Marshall could finally get his first England cap after being named in the squad for Autumn internationals by Shaun Wane.
He wasn’t selected last time round, in what was somewhat of an experimental side for a single mid-season game against France.
However, he is comfortably Super League’s top try-scorer in 2024, and will surely be selected to play against Samoa – in a two-game series after the Super League season has concluded, with games on the 27th of October and the 2nd of November.
However, he will be up against some top names, including Dom Young, who wasn’t able to play mid-season but has been selected this time.
Matt Peet has seen two of his uncapped players – Marshall and Junior Nsemba – named in the 31-man squad by Wane, alongside Tyler Dupree, Ethan Havard, Harry Smith, Luke Thompson and Jake Wardle.
Wigan Warriors boss makes Liam Marshall suggestion after victory over Hull KR
Speaking after their game against Hull KR, via The Mirror, he said: “I’d love him to get that England cap.
“We’ve been having these discussions a long time. I just think at international level, everyone wants massive wingers and he’s up against some huge athletes.
“But as a Wiganer, you wouldn’t swap him for anyone. If he gets it, he more than deserves it. That was a great game. Hull KR were by far the better team in the first half but our players don’t give up.”
Marshall scored twice against the Robins while Willie Peters’ side were down to 12-men, taking his total for the season to 24 – seven ahead of his closest rivals Matt Dufty and Mikey Lewis.
Now 28-years-old, the two-time Super League champion has only ever starred in an England shirt once, coming off the bench in a warm-up game for the last World Cup, resulting in a 50-0 win over Fiji.
However, since that was not an official Test match, he remains officially uncapped, despite being consistently one of Super League’s best wingers for a number of years.
