St Helens star Jack Welsby has provided an update on his injury which has already kept him out of action for three weeks.
Saints’ fifth loss in a row, 46-4 to Leigh Leopards, was a truly dismal night for all involved at the club, and this was compounded with the news that Welsby had a hamstring injury, which was initially said to be likely to keep him out for two months.
As well as Welsby, St Helens have been without Daryl Clark (fractured foot), Mark Percival and Lewis Dodd (elbow ligament damage) through injury, but they’re likely to return for the playoffs.
Long-term injuries include Sione Mata’utia and Konrad Hurrell.
Welsby is arguably the biggest miss however, being probably the best defensive full-back in the league, and he has shared an update on his injury layoff.
St Helens star Jack Welsby provides new injury update
Speaking on The Bench Podcast, this week hosted by just Jon Wilkin, Jack Welsby was the guest, and was asked how his recovery was going.
“Hammy injuries are never nice. First time I’ve ever been in rehab ever, so I’m getting my head round that.”
In terms of a return date, it’s still unclear whether we’ll see him on the field again in 2024, as he continued:
“So yeah just cracking on and don’t know really yet (on when he’ll be back).
“I’ll see what they’re saying but I’m clinging on to all hope that I’ll get back before the end of the year.”
Saints will undoubtedly be desperate for his return, despite Harry Robertson performing admirably when stepping up in Welsby’s absence, after only making his professional debut last month against Wigan Warriors.
Coming up next for St Helens is a tough game against Hull KR, who currently sit top of the Super League table after their big victory over Catalans Dragons.
