“We won’t use that as an excuse” – Willie Peters explains derby defeat to Hull FC

Hull KR coach Willie Peters

Today Hull KR came up short against Hull FC today in the Hull derby which leaves their play-off hopes in an awkward position.

It also saps them of momentum going into a big game against Leeds Rhinos prior to a Challenge Cup semi-final up against Wigan Warriors at Headingley.

Speaking after the game Willie Peters identified his side’s attack as one of the reasons why his side lost the game.

“Not at all, we weren’t fluent or comfortable at all in the attack. We will look at it during the week,” he said on Sky Sports.

“Credit to Hull FC but we will need to work on our attack.”

When asked about the injuries in his side, Peters said:

“It does catch up, we won’t use that an excuse but the players on the field have a job to do and they didn’t get the job done today.

“The reality is, we have some key players on the side line and we’re aware of that but that gives other players an opportunity and certain players didn’t take it today.

“We need to tough it out because we have a game in five days’ time against Leeds who are playing well so we need some honest conversations about where we’re at and what we need to improve.”

The Robins are missing Jordan Abdull and Lachlan Coote has been forced into early retirement.

However, Peters noted that his side let themselves down:

“We made it difficult for ourselves. The disappointing stuff is we started that second half with good defence and then a marker error and they go the full length of the field.

“We didn’t recover from that.

“But effort wise, especially in the first half so that is a positive.”
