‘We know what he wants to do’ – Hull KR boss Willie Peters makes Tyrone May future admission

Hull KR

Hull KR boss Willie Peters expects to see Tyrone May leave Craven Park at the end of the season.

May is in the final year of his contract with the Robins having joined on a two-year deal from Catalans Dragons at the start of the 2024 campaign. He has been a key man for KR in that time, too, working well with Mikey Lewis in the halves and helping the club to a Grand Final last year.

However, May alluded to the fate of his brothers when asked about his future by Serious About Rugby League at Hull KR’s media day in pre-season and it seems he has made that clearer to the hierarchy in east Hull. While a contract extension hasn’t been ruled out, Peters is more than aware that the half-back is exploring opportunities to return Down Under and play alongside his brothers Taylan and Terrell.

As it stands Terrell is the only one of the three with an NRL contract, having joined Wests Tigers from Sydney Roosters in the off-season, while Taylan remains a free agent after leaving Penrith Panthers last year.

What plan May has then remains to be seen but Peters admits Rovers are willing to explore other opportunities.

“At the moment we haven’t really gone in deep with that,” Peters told Serious About Rugby League on Monday when asked about the half-back’s future. “We spoke to Tyrone earlier in the year and I think Tyrone has ambitions to go back to Australia.

“He wants to go and play with his brothers, he’s openly said that so that’s where his focus is, he wants to play with his brothers and he’s said that openly a number of times. I think he’s looking for an opportunity to play with his brothers.”

Asked if he would be happy to see him stay if he had a change of heart, the Hull KR head coach added: “If he changes his mind but we need to see where we’re at as well because the club needs to move forward as well.

“It’s one of those where we need to see. We know what Tyrone wants to do so we can sit and wait for a while but it’s one of those where if an opportunity comes up that we think is worthwhile then we’ll certainly look at it.”
