“We haven’t been bad” – Super League coach pushes back against concerns over form

A lot of questions have been raised about Leeds Rhinos’ form to start the season with the Rhinos somewhat inconsistent.

They have won three of seven games, but beaten the likes of St Helens and Catalans Dragons.

However, they have also produced some performances some would consider under par.

However, when asked if Leeds eased off in games, Rohan Smith said:

“I certainly wouldn’t say we were easing off. They were extremely tough conditions last week and we didn’t defend kicks well but there were a lot of things we did well.

“The resilience we showed. The try after halftime, we really let ourselves down from a game smarts point of view but from that point it would have been easy to go it’s cold, wet and we’re down 18-0 but we didn’t and I felt like in the end we ran out of time rather than energy or interest.

“We were chasing it hard.

“Grouping the games together doesn’t serve any benefit. All I’m thinking about is trying to get a result against Huddersfield and a performance.

“Last week doesn’t matter, won’t impact on the performance this week.”

He went on to speak about consistency:

“I understand the consistency, we all want to play well each week and see wins next to them but now it is just about this weekend.

“I’m not sure that the table has established itself yet, I think there will be a lot of fluctuation.

“There will be ups and downs for most teams.”

He disputed any suggestions that his side have been “bad” as well:

“We haven’t been bad, I don’t think. We have played some good tough games that we have lost in and some we have won.

“We haven’t been at the level we would like to be in some games but we haven’t been bad and the other team has found a good game, we haven’t been beaten by a poor team.”
