“We are seeing ourselves differently” – Smith addresses Hull KR’s form this season ahead of Wigan clash

Hull Kingston Rovers Head Coach Tony Smith admitted he “never thought” about his side being involved in a relegation battle this season.

After finishing bottom of the pile in 2020, many pundits tipped a similar season of struggle for the Robins in 2021. Things certainly looked like panning out that way when they lost their first three games of the season.

But since, Smith’s side has found some scintillating form and now currently sit fifth in the table, looking on course to be involved in the play-offs at the end of the season.

Reflecting on the current situation as well as defying the critics, Smith said, “We are doing just fine. I remember back to the start of the season when I was first asked about the relegation battle before a ball was kicked.

“I think that sort of sets the tone for the pundits. We are not surprising ourselves too much.

“We are seeing ourselves differently. We saw that from before the season started. We are getting more belief in ourselves but I do not think we thought we were ever going to be part of the relegation battle.

“We are just going along with what we thought we would be doing.

“We would have liked to have picked up a few more wins by now and a few more improved performances would have given us those wins but we are doing just fine.”

The Robins’ next challenge is a visit from former Super League champions Wigan Warriors this Friday evening.

Smith’s side won the corresponding fixture at the DW stadium 18-8 earlier this season and are now seeking a home and away double over Wigan for the first time in Super League history.

Looking ahead to the challenge, Smith said, “I think Wigan are playing a bit better than when we last played them.

“Having watched them, I think that some of what they are doing is a little more threatening.

“They are asking more questions of their opponents. I think they have improved and will have more confidence having won a few games and they will be a danger for us.”
