Watson proud of youngsters despite result

Huddersfield Giants boss Ian Watson had doubts over whether the decision to disallow Louis Senior’s try at the end of the match was the correct one.

The Giants were trailing 16-12 with only three minutes remaining but a pass from full-back Ashton Golding released Senior down the left wing to score and could have taken the match into golden point extra-time or even won the game for the visitors if the subsequent conversion was successful.

But referee Marcus Griffiths called the pass forward and the Giants were denied anything from the contest.

Having his say on the call, Watson said “I have not seen a replay of the Louis Senior no try. I know it was called forward from Ashton Golding’s pass.

“Ashton looked like he was in full flight. It is hard to comment when you have not seen it the second time but normally the momentum rule allows passes like that.

“To be fair, it did not look forward to me at the time but the referees are there to make a decision and they made a call on the back end of that.”

However, despite any controversy occurring in the game, Watson did take positives out of the contest, particularly the efforts from his players under their current circumstances.

He added, “I just thought it was a massive positive from the group in terms of what we are dealing with at the moment and what they are going out there and doing.

“Young Olly Russell at 22 years of age going out and learning how to guide a team around the field against some serious senior competitors such as Tom Leuluai, Jackson Hastings and Sam Powell.

“Olly Ashall-Bott is only really young. He has probably only played five or six Super League games but you can see his potential in there.

“It is just hard when you have a lot of young lads to try and blood them all together. They come up against experienced professionals, they just need those leaders around them.

“Today I thought we had some good leaders out there. They did help give us opportunities to help win the game but it was just not to be.”
