Love him or hate him, no one wants to see Sam Tomkins getting knocked out on the field.
But, that’s just what BBC viewers were exposed to back in 2011 when Wigan took on Bradford at Odsal in that year’s Challenge Cup fifth round.
The Warriors were down 6-4 at the time as the clock ran past the half-hour mark. Cue Tomkins.
The elusive playmaker weaved his way through the Bulls’ defence before running under the posts. Unfortunately for Tomkins, Bradford’s Gareth Raynor came across at the same time, hitting the Wigan man across the face in a horrendous tackle.
Raynor was shown the red card, but Tomkins wouldn’t return, having been knocked out clearly on the BBC cameras.
Wigan eventually ran out 26-22 winners.
