Was this the worst ‘tackle’ in Super League history?

In 1998 Wigan and Leeds dominated and in August they met at Central Park in one of the most brutal games of the nineties.

Adrian Morley was emerging as the enforcer of a rejuvenated Rhinos side and in this huge game he laid down an early marker.

From the kick-off Morley smashed Wigan hooker Robbie McCormack who had to be carried off the field.

And as the game approached the half hour mark, Warriors forward Mick Cassidy took it upon himself to get revenge in the most distasteful manner.

Charging forward at full speed from a goal line drop out, Morley was met by a combination of Cassidy’s forearm and elbow in a sickening challenge.

After somehow getting up to walk off the pitch, Morley returned later in the game and set up the match-winning try for centre Brad Godden.

The match was only remembered for one incident though and after Cassidy was placed on report by referee Stuart Cummings, he learned his fate a few days later.

Cassidy attended the RFL’s disciplinary headquarters with Wigan chief executive Phil Clarke and was banned for six matches.

Leeds’ 15-8 win at Central Park saw them complete a league double over the Warriors after defeating them 16-8 at Headingley earlier in the season.

Wigan had the last laugh though, beating the Rhinos 10-4 at Old Trafford to win the inaugural Super League Grand Final.
