Watch emotional moment Kevin Sinfield hits incredible £777,777 fundraising goal

Kevin Sinfield

Prior to starting the seventh day of his most recent challenge, Kevin Sinfield has hit the fundraising goal in yet another inspiring moment.

The former Leeds Rhinos legend will begin the seventh and final day of his latest challenge today (Saturday 7th December) as he takes on the ‘Running Home for Christmas’ challenge.

Across each of the seven days, Kevin Sinfield and his team will run over 50 kilometres with each run split into 7-kilometre chunks. After starting in Liverpool on Monday when he was joined by over 7,000 runners dressed as Santa Claus, Sinfield began his final day at Old Trafford this morning.

He will be running home to Saddleworth, the area where he lives, and he can complete his final day safe in the knowledge that the fundraising total of £777,777 has already been smashed.

An emotional Sinfield was informed of the fact that the total had already been hit whilst appearing on BBC Breakfast this morning. It was a particularly poignant moment considering that this challenge is the first that he has undertaken since the passing of Rob Burrow, his former teammate and best mate who inspired him to start fundraising.

During the fundraising efforts that Kevin Sinfield has undertaken, an incredible figure of over £10 million has been raised to help those suffering from Motor Neurone Disease, the condition that Rob Burrow was diagnosed with back in December 2019.

Burrow lost his battle with MND in June this year but the money raised from efforts by Kevin Sinfield and Co has seen the first bricks laid at the Rob Burrow Centre for MND, highlighting what an immense difference those funds really can make.

The fundraising goal for this week’s event was appropriately seven-focused in honour of Burrow’s playing number and it was revealed to Kevin Sinfield on BBC Breakfast that the goal of £777,777 had been surpassed.

Appearing on BBC Breakfast, who have helped showcase the battles of Rob Burrow and the efforts of Kevin Sinfield wonderfully across the years, Sinfield was told the brilliant news prior to starting the seventh and final day of the challenge.

Asked what the fundraising goal was, Sinfield confirmed: “All the sevens again, £777,777.”

Presenter Naga Munchetty responded: “That’s a lot of money to try and raise isn’t it? You can be optimistic but to get there will feel great won’t it?” Munchetty asked before confirming: “Well, you’re at £782,000.”

That sparked raw and rare emotion from Sinfield as he appeared to wipe away tears before being swiftly reminded that he still has the seventh and final leg to complete.
