Sam Burgess has confirmed that Warrington Wolves’ 14-12 win over St Helens has come at a big cost with a number of injuries sustained.
After suffering back-to-back defeats in Super League, Warrington Wolves got back to winning ways as they gritted it out away from home against St Helens.
The tries came from George Williams and Matty Ashton but it was new signing Marc Sneyd who earned the Man of the Match medal and rightly so with the ex-Salford man orchestrating as if he had been at the club for years.
In reality, he had been involved in just one training session and the captain’s run but you wouldn’t be able to tell and he was the first talking point of Sam Burgess’ post-match interview on Sky Sports.
“I just said, welcome to the club. I thought he was brilliant,” Burgess revealed when asked what post-match words he had with his new playmaker.

Sneyd’s smart kick into the in-goal was latched onto by George Williams for Warrington to take the lead in the 20th minute despite having been under the cosh for the majority of the early exchanges. His three from three record from the tee ended up being the difference on the scoreboard but his in-play kicking was what had Burgess most pleased.
The Warrington coach said: “He managed to settle in really well and I thought him and George combined a couple of times and took the try nicely in the first half. His kicking game is so valuable and obviously we saw a bit of that tonight.”
With that kick looking so well-rehearsed, Burgess had to bat back the suggestion that it was a set play as he lauded the praise on his halves pairing.
He admitted: “Yeah, well, we’ve not practised it at all so that’s just two guys playing rugby together and having a bit of fun. They’ve seen a bit more than I’ve seen. The execution and the courage to make that play that time of the game, when we had not had a lot more down there, these guys are pretty special.”

Whilst the Warrington performance was impressive, the game itself was played at a very intense level for Round Five of Super League and the Wolves boss lauded the praise on his players for their “courage and spirit”, before revealing the injury cost that the win had come at.
Burgess said: “I just must say, it was a great game of rugby tonight but we’ve got a lot of guys playing on one leg who showed a lot of courage and a lot of spirit to get our job done tonight when we really required it.
“We’re probably going to be short four or five next week so they really deserve a lot of credit, the players and I thought Saints were immense. We needed that game tonight.”
Josh Thewlis left the field in the first-half with a hip injury and did not return whilst Matt Dufty was another who looked in a bad way.
Reinforcing his message of pride, Burgess said: “I thought we looked more like ourselves. We were on the back foot a long way today and we just never gave in so I’m really proud of them. They’re a great bunch of boys and they know they’ve got to be better, but tonight I thought there was some really special efforts from some guys out there.”
