Warrington Wolves piled more misery on Paul Wellens’ subpar St Helens as they won 16-2 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. The result ensures Warrington move to within two points of the top two with just a couple of rounds to play in Super League.
St Helens, on the other hand, who consistently shot themselves in the foot against the primrose and blue, now face a nervy end to the campaign with their spot in the top six at severe risk. The Saints have never missed out on the play-offs but on current form it appears to be a distinct possibility.
It was Saints who took the lead as Jon Bennison slotted a penalty early in the contest. But, that was as good as it got for the Merseyside outfit, who found themselves being second best for the majority of the afternoon.
Matty Ashton scored the first try of the game as he picked up the loose ball following a Alex Walmsley error before weaving through a broken Saints line and putting on the afterburners to touch down in the corner.
A bit of magic from George Williams carved out the Wolves’ second of the game as his step created an opening in the line and allowed the half-back to put the ball on a plate for Jordy Crowther.
Josh Thewlis kept the scoreboard ticking over with the boot and as Saints slowly fell apart, the second half passed without Warrington’s defensive line being remotely troubled.
Star man
Ben Currie. A huge shift in his new role through the middle, playing approximately 75 minutes. Got through plenty of defensive work and carried well, too. John Bateman enjoyed himself on the edge, while Cai Taylor-Wray, George Williams and Matty Ashton looked the part, as well.
Key moment
After what was a competitive start to the contest, Matty Ashton’s opening try set the tone for the game as the home side moved to pile pressure on Hull KR in second.
