Warrington Wolves v St Helens team news with 1 doubt and 5 out

St Helens

Warrington Wolves host St Helens today in a Super League game that has massive play-off implications for both sides.

St Helens could go a long way to securing their play-off status with a win knowing that Salford and Catalans will take points off one another later in the day, whereas Warrington could close the gap on second-place Hull KR after their loss last night.

There is still a chance that Warrington could snag a place in the top two which would earn them a bye round and an all-important home semi-final meaning that there’s plenty on the line for both sides.

Wire have lost two of their last five including their most recent game with the 16-12 loss against Leigh seeing them play the majority of the game with 12 men due to Paul Vaughan’s red card.

That’s seen Vaughan banned for the remainder of the regular season and could have implications today given that Sam Burgess’ players were forced to work harder in defeat last week.

As for St Helens, they have also lost three of their last five but beat Huddersfield in a shakey 18-10 win last week to snap a two-game losing streak. Below, we’ve looked at the team news for each side.

Warrington Wolves team news

The biggest news is that three-game ban to Paul Vaughan meaning Sam Burgess’ side will be without their big prop for the remainder of the regular season, after failing to successfully challenge the grading.

He has been replaced by Max Wood in the only change but the likes of star full-back Matt Dufty remain out in what has been a devastating blow of late.

Club captain Stefan Ratchford also remains out after the broken eye socket that he sustained in the previous fixture against St Helens. James Harrison also misses out due to a lower leg injury.

Whilst Warrington are without their star full-back, St Helens have seen theirs return with Jack Welsby named in the squad in a massive boost. Whether he will play or not is still unclear with the belief being that he will be kept until next week but it’s still a positive sign.

As such, Leon Cowan drops out of the squad in the only change to Paul Wellens’ 21-man squad. Tommy Makinson remains suspended after his two-game ban.
