Hull KR underlined their Grand Final credentials on Friday night as they saw off Warrington Wolves 22-4 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. The Robins turned in one of the performances of the season to hit the summit of the Super League table with just seven games remaining.
Sauaso Sue drew first blood as he crashed onto Matt Parcell’s flat pass to power through the challenge of two Warrington Wolves defenders and touch down. It was what KR deserved after the opening six minutes and Tyrone May’s effort a few moments later underlined their early dominance.
Getting up above Matt Dufty, May was there to collect a Mikey Lewis kick to put KR 10 points to the good. Rovers could have had a third as well had Oliver Gildart’s try not been controversially disallowed for a Ryan Hall knock-on in the build-up.
Warrington grew into the contest as George Williams strived to pull the strings and they saw an effort of their own ruled out due to a knock on, rendering Josh Thewlis’ breakaway effort irrelevant.
Matty Ashton got Warrington on the board as he exploited the overlap on KR’s right to squeeze over. But, Lewis restored Rovers’ dominance after seeing his own kick knocked back into his hands by Ryan Hall before powering through the challenge of three defenders to touch down.
Peta Hiku put the finishing touches on the win, getting over late on to make sure of two enormous points at a pivotal period of the season.
Man of the match
Mikey Lewis. The half-back was simply outstanding with the ball and without it with his defensive work just as important as his offensive magic. He got over the line and set up another with his kicking game as Warrington couldn’t handle his creativity and sheer grit. A man for the big occasion.
Honourable mentions to Dean Hadley and Joe Burgess, who were almost faultless on the night.
