Warrington Wolves have reportedly turned down an approach from the NRL for hooker Danny Walker. Canberra Raiders have already secured the services of Matty Nicholson for next season, but it seems they are striving to raid the Wolves once more with a bid being made for Walker.
According to Yorkshire Live, a six-figure offer has been made to Warrington for the England international. However, it is claimed the Super League outfit have turned down the deal with the club determined to keep hold of their man.
Walker, who joined Warrington from Widnes Vikings in 2019, has starred in primrose and blue over the last few seasons, becoming a pivotal member of the first-team fold at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and establishing himself as one of brightest and most exciting nines the country has to offer.
He’s been a key man under Sam Burgess this season, too, making 27 appearances so far in all competitions and scoring four tries in the process. It’s hardly a surprise that Walker is attracting admirers then and reports Down Under have suggested the 25-year-old would be open to the idea of testing himself in the sport’s premier competition.
However, he still has another two seasons left to run on his Warrington contract and it seems the club are determined to keep hold of him, steadfastly rebuffing the Canberra offer.
NRL clubs appear to have stepped up their interest in English talent over the last few years with the likes of Kai Pearce-Paul, Will Pryce, Dom Young, Morgan Smithies and Lewis Murphy heading over to Australian in recent seasons. St Helens half-back Lewis Dodd will be joining Nicholson Down Under next season, too, with the youngster penning a deal with South Sydney Rabbitohs.
It’s a market that seems to be gathering pace and recent reports suggested Gold Coast Titans were also running the rule over existing Super League talent in the hope of being able to uncover a gem.
