Warrington Wolves to link up with NRL champions Penrith Panthers as ‘relationship’ builds

Warrington Wolves plan to link up with NRL champions Penrith Panthers in Las Vegas, Sam Burgess has confirmed. The Wolves will travel to America to take on Wigan Warriors at the Allegiant Stadium as part of a rugby league takeover.

It’s a round three Super League fixture but Warrington plan to spend the week in Nevada and they’ll have an opposed session against Penrith to prepare themselves for the clash with Wigan. Penrith visited Warrington back in February to train with the Wolves in the build up to their World Club Challenge contest against Wigan Warriors at the Brick Community Stadium and it seems the two clubs have developed something of a relationship.

As such, with the pair competing in Vegas on the same day, they’ll meet up to put each other through their paces.

“We’re in for the week, seven days, we’re in Sunday to Sunday,” Burgess said while speaking on The Run Home with Joel and Fletch. “We have a great connection with the Panthers boys.

“When they came over for the World Club Challenge we did some opposed with them and we gave them some our young boys. We have a day with those guys doing opposed with the Panthers over in Vegas.

“We have a great little relationship with them, our academy fellas come out on a trip 18 months ago and they trained out of the Panthers set up there. It’s a great club obviously, so much success but beneath all that the culture in the place is fantastic.”

On the excitement building around the Wolves’ visit to Vegas, Burgess told the Australian radio show: “It’s everywhere, there’s so many people going from Warrington and Wigan.

“It’s almost the talk of the town at the moment. It’s such an exciting thing for the sport over here because it will be prime time on Saturday night on Sky Sports. The whole country is talking about it really and for rugby league, that’s a big thing.

“Sky Sports are pretty excited about it and the fans are pretty excited about it. The game in general I’m excited about what it’s going to be and us and Wigan both had great years last year so it will be a great contest.”
