Warrington Wolves have started their business for 2025 early with the club confirming the signing of a rival Super League playmaker.
Wire were only knocked out of Grand Final contention on Friday night but just a few days later they have announced their first signing for the 2025 season with Sam Burgess’ side looking to go at least one step better next year.
The club have confirmed the signing of London Broncos playmaker Oliver Leyland on a two-year deal with the 23-year-old being one of the standout stars for the capital team this season.
Leyland took on a major responsibility in the halves for London with Jack Campagnolo injured for much of the season and his younger brother, Bill, being injured meaning the Broncos were without their first-choice half-back and hooker.
Regardless, Leyland went about a very strong debut campaign in Suepr League and that understandably caught the eye of rival sides with Warrington Wolves previously rumoured to be among those interested in signing the 23-year-old.
Sam Burgess had even commented on Leyland and the links but the move has now been confirmed with Warrington Wolves announcing the signing of Leyland. He will now likely compete or play behind Leon Hayes once he has recovered from his season-ending injury.
Warrington Wolves sign rising star
A statement on the club’s website confirmed the signing, reading: “Warrington Wolves is delighted to announce the signing of Oliver Leyland on a two-year deal from London Broncos.
“The 23-year-old half-back is a product of London’s Academy and was one of the key figures in their 2023 promotion campaign and plucky 2024 Super League season.
“The Kent-born playmaker contributed 16 try assists this year in the Broncos’ challenging season and is a handy goalkicker too with 40 goals.
“Leyland will join up with his new teammates when pre-season training begins in November.”
Speaking on the move to Warrington, Oli Leyland said: “It’s massive for me and it means a lot to be joining Warrington.
“Playing with and learning off the likes of George Williams, and with Sam Burgess as coach as well, will really bring my game on and help push the team forward.
“I love what they’ve built already under Sam and I can’t wait now to rip in and be a part of it.”
Warrington Wolves Head Coach Sam Burgess added: “Oli is a great young player who we were keen to bring to Warrington.
“He’s been in consistent form all year for London, setting up tries and causing problems for the opposition. I’m excited to see him develop with us next year.”
Leyland would also take to social media to thank London Broncos for playing such a huge part in his development.
From scholarship to super league, this club has been a massive part of my life for the last 9 years and would like to thank everyone who has been on this with me it’s been a hell of a journey. A massive thank you to my parents as well for their support and love ❤️ https://t.co/MYFYRrhrKt
