Warrington Wolves star signing explains how he will maximise potential of “really dangerous player”

Warrington Wolves have some of the best players in Super League in their squad, so it was a major shock when they finished 11th in 2022.

The job of Daryl Powell going into 2023 is unlocking the potential of his players and his recruitment has been designed to do that.

He now has a massive pack and a brand new halfback pairing designed to maximise the attacking potential of former Wigan Warriors star George Williams by bringing in ex-Catalans Dragons man Josh Drinkwater.

Speaking to BBC Merseyside, Drinkwater explained how he will ensure Williams is “not pigeonholed”.

“George is at his best when he’s running the footy. The way we’ll play is that I’ll take control of the team and free George up to float around both sides of the field and not pigeonhole him in anything. He can just play what he sees,” he said.

“We saw when he played for England in the World Cup, when he ran the footy, that’s when he’s at his best.

“I’m really looking forward to playing alongside him. He’s a really dangerous player, and strong runner of the ball, and that’s what I’ll encourage him to do.”

Williams was nominated for the Golden Boot award in the Rugby League World Cup thanks to a stellar tournament scoring three tries, notching 13 assists and averaging 101 metres per game.
