Warrington Wolves star reveals when he’ll return from injury

Warrington Wolves halfback Leon Hayes has provided an injury update after a lengthly spell on the sidelines.

The young star suffered a fracture dislocation of his ankle and had surgery in April, which was widely expected to keep him out for the remainder of the 2024 campaign.

Despite just three games of Super League experience before this year, Hayes was having an excellent 2024, starting in thr halves for every game after the opening round, until his devastating long-term injury.

Before that, he had time on loan with North Wales Crusaders in RFL League One, who he helped to a Promotional Final, where they were defeated by Doncaster RLFC.

The injury has allowed Josh Drinkwater to get an extended spell in the team, which is an opportunity he’s taken incredibly well.

Leon Hayes himself has provided an update on his condition, saying: “Yeah, it was a good ‘un, it got me well but I’m on the up. The backroom staff have been great for me and I’m in really positive spirits actually.

“It’s been different for me, I’ve never had a big injury and overcoming it has been pretty tough, to be honest. There’s been ups and downs and I’m sure there’ll be more to come.

“I think next year. I’ve tried to convince the physios for the end of this year but I don’t think they’re having it. I’ve tried my best, I have, and I push them every day, but I think they’ve got the best interest at heart.”

Oli Leyland has been heavily linked with Warrington Wolves this week, with the London Broncos half-back never likely to remain at the club.

Where this leaves Hayes is unclear, but he’ll be hoping to be back to his best whenever he is back on the field.
