Warrington Wolves star George Williams admits England “panicked” in Golden Point

George Williams has been excellent for all of the Rugby League World Cup.

The former Wigan Warriors man and the Warrington Wolves star was even excellent in the semi-final defeat to Samoa creating the opening try for Elliot Whitehead as well as the equaliser in the dying minutes of the game for Herbie Farnworth.

That sent the contest to Golden Point with England carrying all of the momentum and England boss Shaun Wane even admitted after the game he thought his time would translate this momentum to victory.

However, crucial errors in extra time cost England giving Stephen Crichton the chance to nail a decisive drop gaol and win the game for Samoa.

After the game, Williams reflected on what went wrong for England in the semi-final: “When we got the ball we did things we wanted to and stick to the process and then we’d make an error and let them out of their own end.

“They’ve got too many good players to be off today but we were a little bit off today.

“We needed to be eight or nine out of ten and we weren’t but we have been all tournament which is the most disappointing thing.”

He also admitted that England “panicked” in Golden Point: “Of course, we had the momentum but we made two errors. We panicked a bit in Golden Point. We were our own worst enemy.”
