Warrington Wolves’ Sam Burgess names line-up to face Leigh Leopards with new signings to feature

Warrington Wolves boss Sam Burgess has named his starting line up for Saturday’s pre-season friendly clash with Leigh Leopards. Warrington take on Adrian Lam’s side in a match that will provide a stern warm up for the Super League season while it will also serve as Toby King’s testimonial game.

Obviously King starts then and he’ll be keen to star on what will be a day to remember for the centre. However, he lines up in what seems to be something close to a full strength Warrington side with Burgess keen for his first-teamers to pick up minutes and show signs of encouragement ahead of the new campaign.

Among those first-team stars are three new signings with Burgess giving fans another glimpse of the club’s new recruits following the loss to Widnes Vikings earlier this month. Alfie Johnson gets the nod on the wing in an outside back line up that is completed by King, Rodrick Tai and Matty Ashton.

The sevens convert scored two tries on his first run out in primrose and blue against the Vikings and he’ll be keen to shine once again versus the Leopards. Oli Leyland has a chance to show what he can do alongside George Williams in the pivots, too.

The former London Broncos man has competition for a place in the line up for round one so he’ll be looking to dovetail with George Williams and form a partnership on the field. Dan Russell also gets the nod in the back row after his switch from the NRL.

Elsewhere Matt Dufty starts at full-back, while Paul Vaughan, Danny Walker and Luke Yates make up the front row. Adam Holroyd is the other second rower in the side while Ben Currie is at loose-forward.

Leigh haven’t named their side yet but Lam will no doubt name a strong squad littered with new signings having recruited 10 players over the off-season.

Warrington Wolves starting XIII: Matt Dufty; Alfie Johnson, Rodrick Tai, Toby King, Matty Ashton; George Williams, Oli Leyland; Paul Vaughan, Danny Walker, Luke Yates; Adam Holroyd, Dan Russell; Ben Currie.
