Sam Burgess doesn’t expect Warrington Wolves forward Paul Vaughan to spend too much time on the sidelines after sustaining a finger injury in the Challenge Cup win over St Helens. Warrington booked their spot in the Cup semi-finals with 20-12 win coming at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, but it seems the win came at a price.
Star prop Paul Vaughan was forced off the field early in the first half with a compound finger fracture. The injury could have derailed the Wolves but they held their nerve and Vaughan returned to the fray in the second half to get Burgess’ side over the line.
He did so after receiving pain numbing treatment, but moving forward it’s fair to say Vaughan is a doubt for Saturday’s Super League clash with Hull FC at the very least. Warrington will be keen to take the correct course of action when it comes to his recovery and that could lead to a lay-off.
Burgess doesn’t expect to be without him for too long at all, though.
“You’ve got to be careful with them because the possibility of infection can be pretty bad,” the Warrington boss told the BBC .
“We’ve got great medics on hand who cleaned it out and stitched it up. I thought he was brilliant. Regardless of the bump on his hand he managed to get us forward in the second half when we really needed him.
“It shouldn’t be too long depending on what procedure we go with.”
Burgess added on the prop’s return to the action: “He wanted to come back on. I don’t think he wanted to come off. Once they strapped it up and they put some anaesthetic in to take the pain away he was good as gold.”
Vaughan has started all but one game for Warrington Wolves this season, with the Cup win over Whitehaven in February being the only contest he has sat out of.
