Warrington Wolves’ Sam Burgess candidly addresses Danny Walker and John Bateman futures

Warrington Wolves Sam Burgess

Sam Burgess insists Warrington Wolves will not be letting go of Danny Walker on the cheap.

The comments come following reports that the Wolves were forced to turn down an approach made by Canberra Raiders last week. Walker has been one on Burgess’ star performers this season, as he builds on what has been an impressive few years on an individual level at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

It’s hardly a surprise to see the England international attracting interest then and according to Rugby League Live, the Raiders are keen to add him to their ranks for the 2025 season, with a six-figure offer being made. It has been claimed Down Under that Walker would be willing to make the move to the NRL and test himself in the sport’s premier competition.

Of course, Warrington are already preparing to lose Matty Nicholson to the Raiders at the end of the season and Burgess insists it would take something special for them to let Walker, who still has two years left to run on his deal, follow him.

“I love Danny and I don’t want him to go anywhere,” Burgess said, per the Warrington Guardian.

“He’s been approached by clubs from Australia so that’s the situation we’ve got. He’s managing it really well.

“It’s a problem a lot of clubs get from the NRL if they don’t stand up for something. He’s got a contract and if they want him, they’ll have to make it worthwhile.”

News broke last week of plans for John Bateman to return to Wests Tigers at the end of the season following his stint with Warrington Wolves.

Burgess has confirmed that, but has left the door open for the back-rower to return should plans Down Under change.

“He’s got a contract and he’ll respect that,” he added. “If something changes we’d love to have an opportunity to keep him, but from what I understand he’s going back to Wests Tigers.”
