Warrington Wolves release star with immediate effect

Warrington Wolves have confirmed that they have released prop forward Sam Kasiano with immediate effect, bringing an end to his one year stay at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Kasiano had joined the Wire ahead of the 2023 season from Catalans Dragons but after just the one campaign he now leaves, the club confirming that his release comes with immediate effect.

The 33-year-old could now look for other options in Super League with Salford Red Devils looking for a prop reportedly and with an available quota spot.

Kasiano could also return down under where he started his career in the NRL.

The club confirmed his release in a statement posted on their website and shared to their social media channels.

It read: “WARRINGTON WOLVES CAN CONFIRM THAT SAM KASIANO HAS BEEN RELEASED FROM HIS PLAYING CONTRACT WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT.

“The 33-year-old prop joined the club ahead of the 2023 season and made 26 appearances during last year’s last campaign.

“We would like to thank Sam for his contribution to the Wire and wish him well for the next chapter of his career.”

The prop forward started his career with Canterbury Bulldogs for whom he played the majority of his 153 NRL appearances, before making the switch to Super League in 2019.

That saw him move to Perpignan to play for Catalans Dragons where he spent three years prior to last season’s move to Warrington, however this release sees his contract cut short.

It’s also one of the major pieces of roster management that Sam Burgess has undertaken since taking on the role as Warrington’s head coach.

The first time head coach will now have both cap space and a quota spot available to him which could lead to the Wolves making another signing before the Super League season starts.

It also highlights the poor transfer business of the pre-2023 campaign with both Kasiano and Josh McGuire having been released from their contract with immediate effect at some point.

Other signings made alongside that pair including fellow Catalans players Josh Drinkwater and Gil Dudson, winger Matty Russell and NRL import Paul Vaughan.

Ahead of the 2024 season Warrington have added more talent including Lachlan Fitzgibbon, Rodrick Tai, Wesley Bruines, Jordan Crowther,  Zane Musgrove, Brad Dwyer and Sam Powell.
