Warrington Wolves release clarifying statement after being “named and shamed” by government over minimum wage

Earlier today, Warrington Wolves were named among 200 companies who failed to pay employees the minimum wage in a lost published by the Government to “name and shame” as the article put it.

The article claimed Warrington had not paid a total of £7,000 to employees.

Now the club has released the following statement:

“Warrington Wolves are aware of today’s Government story regarding the National Minimum Wage.

“The Club’s minimum hourly pay has never fallen below the national minimum wage and no staff members have ever been underpaid.

“The 34 cases mentioned took place between 2013-2018. The cases relate to colleagues who were able to purchase merchandise or tickets and have the money deducted from their salary, which in turn took some cases to below national minimum wage. This incentive has since been stopped.

“Additionally, some colleagues were not paid within the strict time periods specified in the National Minimum Wage regulations. This was remedied as soon as the club became aware of the issue.”

So, for the most part the situation was simply a miscommunication with employees using their salary for merchandise and tickets and having it deducted from their wage.

The Wolves are gearing up towards a clash with Castleford Tigers at the weekend.
