Warrington Wolves recruit opens up on first impressions after star showing

Alfie Johnson was delighted with his first run out in Warrington Wolves colours even if the Wolves couldn’t secure the result on Friday night. Sam Burgess’ side fell to a 36-22 defeat against Widnes Vikings at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, but Johnson was one of the standout performers.

The rugby sevens convert started on the wing in what was a young Wire line up and scored two tries, rising highest to collect a kick and touch down for his first before getting the scoreboard moving after the break, too. However, his efforts couldn’t prevent the Championship side from scoring six tries against their hosts to ensure Warrington’s pre-season campaign started with a defeat.

There’s still a month or so to go until the start of the Super League season but Johnson is loving his time in Cheshire so far and was pleased to have made a positive first impression.

“Obviously not the result we wanted but pretty buzzing to get the two tries,” he told Warrington Wolves’ channels. “It was just a great experience being out there here at the Halliwell, playing in front of the crowd and giving it my first go.

“It’s been a tough pre-season but it’s great to get that actual game feel, get on the wing, play a bit and take a few hard carries and work out what Warrington’s all about.”

On his first try, he added: “It’s something we’ve been working on quite a lot in pre-season, taking those high balls.

“We kind of identified it as an area we really want to target this year. Coming from union a lot of stuff is high ball and chasing box kicks, plucking it out of the air. I really back myself in that area and I was pretty buzzing to take that one out and land over the try line.”

Johnson wasn’t the only man making a debut of sorts for Warrington against the Vikings with Dan Russell, fresh from his move from down under, and former London Broncos man Oli Leyland appearing, too. Russell managed to get himself on the scoresheet as well, with Jake Thewlis grabbing Warrington’s only other try.
