Warrington Wolves are set to be able to make some big moves in the off-season due to their quota situation.
This year, Lachlan Fitzgibbon and Zane Musgrove signed from NRL, while PNG international Rodrick Tai also came in; these all hold quota spots.
Currently, clubs can have a maximum of seven ‘non-Federation trained players’ in their squad – and these players are defined as those that didn’t play three seasons of rugby in Europe before they turned 21.
These rules are much more relaxed than previous rules, which were at one point to only allow three foreign players in most English sides.
The salary cap for ‘home’ players is £100,000 per year, while non-Federation trained players can earn up to £150,000.
Warrington’s quota situation for 2025 with spaces free for big signings
Sam Kasiano’s release meant until the recent signing of Luke Yates, contracted through 2026, they had a spot free.
It has already been confirmed that Josh Drinkwater will leave the club at the end of the year, while Rodrick Tai will also be off-contract at the end of the current campaign.
Paul Vaughan, meanwhile, is entering the final year of his contract next season after signing a three-year deal in 2023, joining from Canterbury Bulldogs.
Fellow prop Zane Musgrove, signed this year, also has one more year on his two-year contract, signed after leaving St George Illawarra Dragons.
However, there are some key names contracted all the way through the 2026 season.
Luke Yates was originally signed on a two-year deal from the start of the 2025 season, but he joined early from Huddersfield Giants for the remainder of the current campaign.
Meanwhile, after an excellent first Super League season for Lachlan Fitzgibbon, he’ll be available for Wire for another two years too.
Finally, fullback Matt Dufty, second in the league for both tries and try assists – and comfortably the highest metre-maker in Super League this season – is also contracted through 2026, meaning he’ll likely be a staple of Warrington sides for years to come.
The Wolves have two free quota spots available for next season, meaning they’re free to make a couple of huge overseas signings as they look to build on a much-improved 2024.
