Warrington Wolves are through to the Super League play-off semi-final after a thrilling victory over St Helens.
They hit first with a Toby King try after just two minutes, but St Helens sprung into gear after that.
Tommy Makinson’s acrobatic effort seemed to have seen him go into touch before grounding, but the video referee stuck with the on-field decision of try.
They then scored again with Mark Percival, and Makinson extended the lead with his second try of the afternoon to put them right in the driving seat.
However, after an unbelievable offload from George Williams, Matty Ashton scored out on the left to keep them in it.
At half time, it was 16-10 Saints thanks to a failed drop-goal attempt from Jonny Lomax – and that ended up being huge.
Another wonderful pass from Williams after the beak, fizzed in to Toby King, saw him cross over again and tie the game up at 16-apiece, with a relatively easy kick for Josh Thewlis.
Ten minutes later, Ashton was in again – they made the most of a mistake and King turned creator to send his winger in for an easy try.
They seemed to be heading to a win, but Jon Bennison’s own acrobatic try, and Percival’s on-the-hooter conversion out wide, made things trickier.
However, after the first attempt was batted down by the Saints defence, George Williams’ drop goal was successful, meaning they ran out 23-22 winners after golden-point, setting up a fantastic semi-final clash with Hull KR.
Star man
Toby King certainly came close, but George Williams’ brilliance gave the side two tries, and he shone in a huge game, stepping up to the plate in the halves.
Key moment
The Saints mistake that allowed Williams, King and Ashton to combine to send the Wire ahead was big at the time, but in the end, Jonny Lomax will have sleepless nights after his failed drop-goal attempt right before half-time.
