Warrington Wolves name squad ahead of Widnes Vikings friendly

Warrington Wolves - 04/10/2024 - Rugby League - Betfred Super League Semi Final - Hull KR v Warrington Wolves - Sewell Group Craven Park, Hull, England - Warrington's head coach Sam Burgess.

Sam Burgess has named an extended 24-man Warrington Wolves squad to take on Widnes Vikings on Friday night. After seeing last weekend’s scheduled clash with Halifax Panthers cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, this week’s clash at the Halliwell Jones Stadium will be the Wolves’ first friendly of pre-season.

In an unusual move, Warrington confirmed their starting line-up for the Vikings game last week with all three of their off-season recruits set to play against the Championship team. Stefan Ratchford will skipper the side as the most senior man involved, with the playmaker set to make his first appearance since suffering a nasty facial injury last year.

He’ll partner new signing Leyland in the halves, while Dan Russell will line up in the back-row and Alfie Johnson, who has made the move from rugby sevens, will feature on the wing.

Zane Musgrove will also be included as a notable senior presence in what is a young line-up, featuring a number of young players on the fringes Burgess’ senior squad. The rest of Warrington’s matchday squad looks similar, with a full list being released this afternoon.

It seems as though there will be no senior presence on the bench, with those first-teamers named last week being the most notable names in the group. However, the game will provide a chance for Warrington’s promising youngsters to shine at the Halliwell Jones against a side who will come to compete.

Warrington will play one more game in pre-season after Friday’s game, with testimonial man Toby King being honoured with a friendly against Leigh Leopards. The Wolves will then take on either Whitehaven or Swinton Lions in the third round of the Challenge Cup before their Super League opener against Huddersfield Giants.
