Warrington Wolves name new captain for 2025 season

Warrington Wolves have confirmed a new club captain for the upcoming 2025 Super League season with England skipper George Williams taking the role.

Williams has captained the Wire in the past few seasons but veteran Stefan Ratchford has been the club’s official captain, however, it’s now been confirmed that has changed for 2025.

Ratchford will remain an integral part of the club’s leadership group but the England skipper has now taken over the role of Warrington Wolves captain.

Warrington Wolves confirmed the news in a club statement that outlined the importance of Williams in driving standards at the club, as he has done for England since 2023 following Sam Tomkins’ international retirement.

The statement read: “George Williams has been named the new club captain of Warrington Wolves ahead of the 2025 campaign.

“The stand-off has led out the side on a number of occasions in recent seasons and now takes the role on a permanent basis. Stefan Ratchford will play a key role in the leadership group, supporting Williams.”

Expanding further, Warrington argued that the standards driven by Williams have risen with the playmaker in line to make his 100th appearance for the Wolves this season should he stay healthy.

The 82-game Wire star said: “It’s a proud moment for me to be named Warrington captain.

“I really love the group we’ve got here and there’s many leaders around the place who I will lean on too.

“Leadership is definitely something that has come more natural to me the older I’ve got. I’ve been around the game a long time now. I’m only 30, so I’ve still got a lot to give, but it’s something I’ve worked on and I’m really proud that I’ve been able to do so.

“I feel the full community has really got behind the club since Sam [Burgess] has come in. The fans know there is a passion and commitment from the group every time we play and this year will be no different.”

Williams could potentially lead Warrington out when they take on Whitehaven in the Challenge Cup on Saturday before leading the Wolves out against Huddersfield Giants in Round One of Super League the following week.
