Warrington Wolves man shares injury update as return game outlined

Warrington Wolves star Josh Thewlis has revealed when we could next see him return to the pitch, after offering a fitness update.

Thewlis has been out of action since the narrow win over Catalans at the end of June. He deputised at full-back in that game for Cai Taylor-Wray, who hasn’t featured since April.

However, the 24-year-old couldn’t complete the game against Les Dracs, and needed to leave the field before half-time, despite his own ambitions to stay on.

That led Ewan Irwin to take up the number one role, something that he did excellently as he made a game-winning tackle on Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet.

Thewlis has missed three games up to now, and whilst his return game is all but confirmed, he still has a little while before he can run out with his teammates again.

“We played against Catalans at home, and I stepped off my right foot and I thought ‘I don’t know what that was’,” he revealed to The Bench podcast.

“I was like ‘oh, I need a groin strap on’, and they [physios] were like ‘no, you’re not having one on. You’re just coming off,’ and ever since it’s just got progressively worse.”

Thewlis is set for a period of four to six weeks on the sidelines, but is confident he can make a return at the lower end of that time frame.

A four-week return would see him back for either the home game against York in round 23, or the delayed round two game against Hull KR on August 18.

Many people believed that the former England Knight had suffered an ankle injury, given that is what looked to be the problem when he went down injured.

However, the winger has explained it was nothing to do with his ankle, rather a hereditary condition that he has suffered with previously.

“I’ve actually had a hernia, so it’s nothing to do with my abductor, and it’s nothing to do with my ankle, which I don’t know where that’s come from.

“It’s called inguinal hernia repair. I’ve already had the mesh put in, and the mesh has come off and damaged some nerves, so I had to get that tidied up.”

“…My dad’s had eight hernias, so that’s where it has come from. That’s my fourth one.”
