Warrington Wolves make third 2025 signing as rugby sevens international switches codes

Warrington Wolves recruit Alfie Johnson with head coach Sam Burgess

Warrington Wolves have announced the signing of rugby sevens international Alfie Johnson. The outside back has penned a two-year deal with the club, committing himself to the Wolves until the end of the 2026 Super League season at the very least.

Johnson has been playing with Leeds Rhinos reserves in recent months and after being impressed with his performances and potential, the Wolves have swooped to secure his services.

The 23-year-old has a rugby union background but has represented both England and Great Britain in sevens during his career so far and will hope to make a splash after agreeing a deal in the 13-man code.

“Warrington is a massive club with a massive fanbase and I’m really excited for the opportunity,” Johnson told Warrington Wolves club media after signing.

“As soon as Sam [Burgess] and Gary Chambers got in touch I was set on making the move. I’ve always had the ambition to play professional rugby at the top level. I want to get my head down now and work hard to be the best version of myself and repay the faith the club has shown in me.

“I feel rugby league really suits my style of play and attributes where I can be effective both sides of the ball. I can’t wait to get started.”

Head coach Burgess added: “It’s great to welcome Alfie to the club. His main attributes and style suit perfectly to rugby league and he’s got a big pre-season in front of him now to build on his potential.”

Johnson will link up with the Wolves at the start of pre-season after becoming the third new signing announced by the club this week, following the additions of Dan Russell and Oliver Leyland. Russell joins the club from St George Illawarra Dragons, while Leyland makes the switch after an impressive campaign with London Broncos in Super League.
