Warrington Wolves looking to make two more “key” signings as Daryl Powell reflects on leadership in squad

2022 was not what Warrington would have wanted as they slipped down the league to 11th, their worst finish in Super League.

Clearly a year of transition, Warrington have already made some big signings for next year especially in the pack like Sam Kasiano, Gil Dudson, Josh McGuire and Paul Vaughn.

Speaking on Warrington’s Season Debrief, Powell opened up on how he felt those signings would help the leadership on the field in 2023: “The players we have recruited, like Josh McGuire and Gil Dudson are significant leaders in the middle of the field.”

Powell also thinks the Wolves are developing young leaders in their squad: “People like Josh Thewlis, young players who have drive in them who lead by example and is a really good communicator. Leon Hayes spoke at halftime in the Salford game, so there’s people there who has a maturity beyond their years.”

However, Powell said he has to be cautious about how you use young players: “There’s a lot where fans will comment on putting a younger player there. I work with players on a consistent basis, I think I showed I will give young players a go so I think it’s an unfair shot.

“I think throughout my coaching career I’ve given young players an opportunity.”

Clearly developing an exciting squad for 2023 and beyond, Warrington’s recruitment for next year isn’t over yet with Powell confirming that they’re still looking to sign players in two key positions: “We’re looking to sign in a couple of key positions, but you can’t sort everything with the click of your fingers. At the start of the year we spoke about the pack and we’ve worked hard to fix. I think we’ve got a well balanced team. I’m pretty confident.”

The Wolves could still be on the market for a halfback after letting go of Gareth Widdop whose move to Castleford is all but confirmed.

However, Stefan Ratchford can play there as can youngsters like Leon Hayes.
